12 Things University Suddenly Expects You to Remember Yourself

HELP! Who's going to remind me?!?!

9/1/20262 min read

One of the great surprises of university is discovering how many things nobody is going to remind you to do.

At school, someone was usually checking.

Homework.

Timetables.

Forms.

Appointments.

Uniform.

Lunch.

Suddenly you arrive at university and everybody quietly assumes you know how to manage your entire life.

You don't.

Not yet.

And that's completely normal.

Here are twelve things university suddenly expects you to remember yourself.

1. Where You’re Supposed to Be

Lectures move.

Rooms change.

Seminars appear.

Your timetable becomes your responsibility.

Take ten minutes at the beginning of each week and check where you actually need to be.

2. Assignment Deadlines

Do not rely on remembering.

Put every deadline somewhere visible as soon as you receive it.

Then work backwards.

A 2,000-word essay due Friday should not first enter your consciousness Thursday evening.

3. Emails

University email suddenly becomes important.

Check it.

There will be information about:

Classes.

Deadlines.

Accommodation.

Student finance.

Societies.

Changes.

Things you absolutely did not know were happening.

4. Laundry

Eventually you will run out of clean clothes.

This is not a system failure.

It is laundry.

Pick a regular day.

Your future self will thank you.

5. Food

You can be busy and still need to eat.

Have a few basic meals you can make even when you’re tired.

And keep something easy in the cupboard for the days when your motivation disappears.

6. Appointments

GP appointments.

Dentist.

Personal tutor.

Student services.

Banking.

Accommodation.

Write them down immediately.

7. Your Bank Balance

Avoid the strategy of simply not looking.

Checking your balance does not make the number worse.

It just lets you make decisions sooner.

8. Cleaning

You do not need a spotless room.

You do need somewhere that does not become a public-health experiment.

Ten minutes regularly is considerably easier than three hours when things have gone too far.

9. Returning Things

Library books.

Borrowed items.

Online orders.

Forms.

Deadlines apply to extremely boring things too.

10. Travel

If you're going home for Christmas, reading week or a weekend, don't always wait until the day before to book.

Planning ahead can save money and stress.

11. Asking for Help

Independence does not mean figuring absolutely everything out alone.

University has:

Tutors.

Student services.

Accommodation teams.

Libraries.

Academic support.

Wellbeing services.

Use them.

12. Rest

Yes, this belongs on the list.

University can become an endless mixture of work, socialising and life admin.

You are allowed to stop.

You do not have to earn sleep by completing every task in existence.

The goal isn't perfection

You're going to forget things.

Everybody does.

The point is to have somewhere reliable to put the things that matter.

That's why we created The University Student Planner — a fillable planner for timetables, deadlines, weekly priorities, appointments, life admin and the everyday things that suddenly become your responsibility.
